Octal Fatness (pentode preamp) DIY amp This is a 5-10W amp which employs a pentode preamp, 3-band tone stack, and single-ended output stage. It is designed by David Jones, and has a sweet and airy clean tone as well as being capable of fat blues and rock tones. It has a 6SJ7 metal pentode and 12AX7 gain stage/buffer in the preamp as well as a 6V6 output tube. I used a variable cathode resistor in the output stage which allows me to use a 6AR6 or 6L6 for more power if desired. The 6SJ7 provides a lot of compression and the amp has a lot of sustain when clean or dirty.

Getting rid of Self-HUM in guitar tube amps by JC Maillet One can interpret early guitar tube amp architectures as examples of "mixed-signal" analog systems ... there we find the presence of up to three types of signals occupying the same platform: (i) signal frequencies from the guitar (ie. above 100-Hz or so), (ii) LFO signals (less than 5Hz) from the Tremolo circuit and (iii) 60-Hz or related hum coming from the power supply and filament circuit (a fixed frequency of 60-Hz and possibly its harmonics such as 120-Hz). Indeed, we're dealing with a mixed-signal system involving three frequency ranges of AC energy. Old vintage equipment is often synonymous with HUM and musicians have been forced to accept this as part of the technology. As it turns out, with proper recognition of the basic principles and through simple execution it is possible to pretty much eliminate all instances of hum in any old tube amp !

Is Point-to-Point Better Than PCB? by Randall Aiken Which is better, point-to-point (PTP), or printed circuit board (PCB)? You will find manufacturers arguing both sides, some quoting outlandish claims to support their argument, others claiming PTP is much better, then, when they start using PC boards, they claim PCB is better. What is the truth?
Fender 63 Reverb Reissue Capacitor Mod Instructions This modification involves replacing the Mixer capacitor C10 with a silver mica capacitor valued at around 390 pf. I used a 500pf capacitor (rated at 500V), because that's what I had in my spare parts bin! Any value in between will probably work as well. The result is a deeper and richer reverb sound - it's hard to describe, but I was very pleased with the results...

SELMER TRUVOICE AMPLIFIERS SITE This page is a joint collaboration between Tim Fletcher and myself, Steve Russell. Tim is an enthusiast who, like me, believes that the old Selmer guitar and bass amplifiers have never received the recognition that they deserve. There is virtually no information available anywhere on these old workhorses from the 60's. Totally different story with Vox amps, of course. The WWW is full of sites expounding the virtues of those admittedly fine amplifiers. Yet, during the early 60's in the UK, both Vox and Selmer were running equally in quality and quantity, supplying the up-and-coming bands of the day with professional standard amplification. Tim and myself would like to help redress the balance. (Site includes some schematics.)

The Materials and Shapes of Vacuum Tube Heaters By W. A. Hasset, Senior Engineer Western Electric Co. In vacuum receiving tubes, heat can be supplied to the cathode by either of two conventional methods; "Directly", by means of a current passed through a filament of base metal to which the emissive material has been applied; or "Indirectly", by means of a separate, insulated heating element which is mounted within the cathode structure. Because the directly heated cathode is rather simple in construction, we will discuss only the heating element in an indirectly heated cathode...

Langmuir's talk on Pathological Science (December 18, 1953) Symptoms of Pathological Science: 1. The maximum effect that is observed is produced by a causative agent of barely detectable intensity, and the magnitude of the effect is substantially independent of the intensity of the cause. 2. The effect is of a magnitude that remains close to the limit of detectability; or, many measurements are necessary because of the very low statistical significance of the results. 3.

"Developments in Trustworthy-Valve Techniques" from Electrical Communication magazine for September 1954 It has not been uncommon for designers of radio and radar equipment to state categorically that valves are inherently unreliable. Such criticism has been regarded with some scepticism by valve engineers, who have ample evidence of trouble-free operation of certain valves, such as those used in long-distance telephone repeater and carrier systems, and therefore were able to visualise suitably designed valves that could be manufactured by mass production methods and yet give reliable operation under certain special mechanical conditions. Valve-manufacturing methods are determined simply by the economics of supply and demand, and the valve maker must be sure that the many complicated piece parts that are used to build a modern receiving valve and the special finishing processes that are employed are all devised to secure ease of assembly and rapid exhaust so that the valves manufactured shall be salable... .pdf file. 17pgs.

VALVE MICROPHONICS The construction of a valve is not a completely rigid structure. Any relative movement of the various electrodes not only affect inter-electrode capacitances but also variations in current and mutualconductance. Such relative movements can be caused by vibration, such as sudden knocks or even ambient sounds. Mullard presented the results of an investigation into micrphonics in valves which it published in two articles that appeared in the November 1962 issue of their publication "Mullard Technical Communications". A summary of their findings follows.

Is Point-to-Point Better Than PCB? by Randall Aiken Which is better, point-to-point (PTP), or printed circuit board (PCB)? What is the truth?
Tube Amplifier Theory On this page I will publish some tube amplifier theory. Output transformer impedance calculation is a bit tricky before you get the hang of it. Some useful formulas for calculation of output power, distortion and impedances will also be published. 3. Ziegler Pickups The Pickup Calculator The first program, Pick-Up Calculator, (see fig. 1) was designed to calculate pickup resistance, and number of winds based on bobbin dimensions and wire diameter. This tool really only comes in handy when you are trying to design a custom pickup, or when you are designing something innovative. When I make pickups, resistance and the number of winds are just two of the main variables that I pay attention to. This tool helps to give me an estimate of what the pickup might be like when I build it. This program has saved me from making a few poorly designed pickups...

TIPS TO TEST AND DISCHARGE CAPACITORS Keep them cool! The electrolytic capacitors can't stand heat. It causes them to dry out... Care, feeding and storage of capacitors Electrolytics have a shelf life. Electrolytics can dry out on the shelf even though they were never used/turned on even once... Equivalent Series Resistance- an important parameter of a capacitor ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) represents the effective resistance resulting from the combination of wiring, internal connections, plates, and electrolyte (in an electrolytic capacitor). The ESR may result in totally incorrect or unstable operation of devices like switch-mode power supplies and deflection circuits in TVs and monitors. As would be expected, electrolytic capacitors tend to have a high ESR compared to other types - even when new. However, due to the electrochemical nature of an electrolytic capacitor, the ESR may indeed change - and not for the better - with time...
How to Solder - for Beginners and Experts Soldering is a mysterious process, at some level even to metallurgists that study it for a living. We know a little bit about how it works, and a few Rules to make it work most (99.99999%) of the time.
